This is Food Network host Melissa d'Arabian. She won season five of Next Food Network Star challenge hands down.

We met up at SeaTac and swapped recipes while waiting for our luggage*. I taught her how to make Campbell's Tomato Soup (open can, add water, heat, garnish with cheez-its). She taught me how to prepare, properly season, and serve oxtail stew with lintils. All while waiting for our luggage! She's very efficient and gifted instructor.

*We did no such thing. But she is an incredibly warm and gracious person, even after a 5 hour flight.

I figured out Lost. Part 2.

In response to my friends Jim and conversations held with them today, here is further proof that I have figured out Lost. This shit will play out, and you will all tell me at the end of the season how awesome I am.

Jim T. responds to me in the frustrated voice of a Lost follower, tired of being hooked and dragged along for so many years, yet unable to stop watching...like most of us.

[micah] The SM and Jacob are very high level. The Dharma initiative, the Others, the Survivors...they're all pawns and proxies for SM and Jacob's larger schemes, which are played out over loonnng periods of time.

[Jim] What is the magnetism?
[micah] Merely a tool used to draw people in. In one scheme involving the Dharma Initiative, they were allowed to reveal the magnatism and thus forced to build in a control (the computer and 108 minute clock) which was then useful in manipulating people to certain behavior (Desmond and the dude from Shawshank), but one which was designed to fail, thereby bringing more people to the island.

[Jim] Why is chrisitian shepherd appearing?
[micah] A tool, used to nudge people along. But don't really know.

[Jim] Why do they all know each other in parallel timelines?
[micah] They don't, but they are attracted to each other like iron filings to a magnet...destined to be together and my guess is somehow they will come to the island in the parallel world, too.

[Jim] How does the island move?
[micah] Don't know.

[Jim] Who are the others?
[micah] Followers of Jacob - various people living there following his rules, aiding him in his watch over the SM. Some (Richard) are kept alive for hundreds of years through the spring we saw them dunk Sayeed in (only when it's clear and tasty, I'm guessing).

[Jim] How did Dharma get there?
[micah] Through the manipulations of one or the other - Jacob or SM - they found a way to get there regularly, allowing for colonization.

[Jim] Who is on what side Ben or Widmore?
[micah] Ben was on Jacob's side, but was easily manipulated by SM over time, because Jacob stopped (or never really) talked to him. He was duped for years by the SM's machinations, and in turn he duped the Others into following him! Widmore - another tool, by which side I do not yet know, useful in manipulating people into coming to the island or forcing people off, etc etc. Probably the SM's unwitting accomplice.

[Jim] Why the psychic thing?
[micah] A tool, used to nudge people along. But don't really know.

[Jim] Why cant children be born there except Claire or Sun who had to be pregnant before arrival?
[micah] The island is merely a destination. Not a starting point for any new society or civilization. No new babies allowed in prison!

[Jim] What is the point of the pilot Frank lupidis? His name wasn’t on the cave wall? Or Desmond or Juliet ?
[micah] Comic effect, Tragic effect, Tragic effect. They are all tools, used in the balancing game.

The names on the cave wall are those who are candidates to be the new jailer, the new Jacob, the new White. Jacob I think was merely a shell for the Order god, and SM has destroyed the shell, thinking he has destroyed the god. But the god now seeks a new shell. And it shall...be...JACK!

That will be the ultimate twist! Jack, the Man of Science, the Non-Believer, the "this island is a lie!" guy, will become a shell for the Guardian! And Locke, the Believer, the Man of Faith, the "this island has a purpose for us!" guy will in turn become the prisoner, the chaos, the evil force, the would-be destroyer of the island prison! It's a classic flip!

The tone of the ever-present theme of Locke vs Jack will change as each person assumes the other's former role.

I figured out Lost. Part 1

I told Wendy last night I had Lost figured out.

The island is a jail for the smoke monster. Jacob was the jailer, keeping the SM from leaving and wrecking the world.

Jacob kept the lid on Pandora's box, the apple on the Tree of Knowledge, the door to the jail locked.

The SM is Chaos, and Jacob is Order.

The SM is constantly trying to escape and manipulates people into doing things for him. Jacob pulls/pushes/gently nudges people to counter those activities. All the events leading to the Oceanic 815 crashing and the survivors living on the island were gentle nudges by both powers - the SM aiming to secure release, Jacob working to keep the jail locked tight.

Thus there is a long history of balancing between the two forces of SM and Jacob (hence the black rock, white rock joke). The SM thinks he has won and is seeking to escape (through manipulation of Sawyer, Ben, etc) whereas Jacob has already set things into motion to counter this, way before his death (luring back the Oceanic Six, time travel of the survivors, etc). The balancing will continue on forever, long after the series is rendered unto syndication.

It's all about balance!

Prince of Carts

Overweight 30-something office drone white boy who has no inclination for golf, applies for avolunteer position at PGA. He's hired. And so I find myself aiding the Chairman of Carts at this week's PGA Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. I love America.

Volunteering has been an adventure. My job has been to help distribute golf carts to people working the event. In so doing, I met a lot of great people, and have seen many interesting sights.

Of note:
1. Charging carts while there is standing water on the ground is dicey business. GFCI outlets help, but grabbing each charger, I cringe awaiting the jolt that tells me a.) that God has a sense of humor and b.) that GA Power seems to be sticking to their claim of "Always On".
2. Watched a woman have a hissy fit when we marked her cart as having "Restricted Access" to the grounds during play on Thursday. Princess took it real hard.
3. Port-a-potties are still nasty even if the only people using them are the upper crust of the Southeast.
4. The complimentary volunteer golf attire is nicer than most of my own clothes. I think I need to redress the balance of my wardrobe vs. video game budgets.
5. Telling Tiger that he "cannot drive that cart here" is a good way to get a death glare.
6. Men watching golf invariably wear golf shirts. No joking here. They ALL do.
7. There is a Top Gun pilot in attendance who carries a portable, yet powerful radio to help guide in the Navy flyover for the opening ceremony. He is accompanied by arm candy, rather than any kind of security. To me, this makes him even more awesome.
8. Navy flyovers make any event more badass.
9. The guys on the ground working for the various TV networks are dicks. Plain and simple.
10. I still don't have any desire to play golf.

And so with the events behind me I ask myself, "Why the hell didn't I choose to work a golf course when I was a teen?" I saw Caddyshack. I saw the girls at my school whose daddies played. I knew how comfortable a visor can be.

And yet I chose books, Super Nintendo, Sam Raimi movie marathons, and Magic: The Gathering instead. I could have been getting exercise, driving carts like a maniac, getting paid, smoking cigarettes, seeing the sunshine, wearing Chinos, etc. all that time.

A 7/6 Craw Wurm crushing a 4/4 Water Elemental has nothing on this.

The Gathering Storm Cover Art

So... The Gathering Storm is scheduled for publication on November 3rd, 2009. I am excited. I have already written the ~$25 into my November budget. I will get a copy and read it non-stop, ignoring spouse and children (as my wife did with Twilight).

I've been checking up on the author's blog - and he's excellent at sharing. Thank you Mr. Sanderson. However his latest entry has me cynical all over again, though through no fault of his own. TOR (the publisher) has released the cover art. And it sucks. Oh dear lawd it is awful.

Too bad SNL is over this season. This should get it's own "Really?" with Seth Meyers. This cover deserves to be mocked. Is that a wormhole in the house? A secret tunnel to Narnia? I want to junkpunch the editor that approved this.

How can I convince other people to read this series, when all the coverart looks as if it was picked from a local junior high submission contest?

As to why we are saddled with Mr. Sweet and his interpretations...It's clear that TOR signed some deal with the artist and are as such contractually obligated to use him for the whole series. Because surely otherwise rational publishers would have sacked him long before now. Or maybe the decision makers are similarly out of touch.

Did you see the midget/hobbit on the Crossroads of Twilight cover? There are no fucking hobbits in Randland! Can ANYONE explain that one?

We ate at Lady & Sons. I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. The place has plenty of hype, to be sure. And a waiting list a mile long. It was worth the experience ( I really love the photos of Paula Dean when young) but I wouldn't eat here regularly.

I've had the damnedest time with my large lens failing to focus on the right subject. Nevertheless, those out-of-focus photos can still be great.

Delicious, enormous hush puppies. Just what every growing boy needs.

Some of you will note that I am eating turkey, stuffing, corn, and hush puppies. According to the lunch lady, I have exceeded the prescribed "meat and two veg" meal combo design and so will have to pay a surcharge. Totally worth it. Others may say that I have strayed outside the lines of the acceptable traditional turkey meal combination.

Frak you all (including you lunch lady), I believe this to be a valid meal for several reasons.
1. Turkey loves company.
2. The hush puppies are huge, and deserve to be eaten.
3. Hush puppies are derived from corn products, and so can successfully counted along with the corn as one larger conglomerated serving of "corn". Note: this argument did not fly with the lunch lady. I forked out the extra $.95 anyway.
4. I am hungry. My belly screams for fried corn meal balls.
5. Those hush puppies are HUGE and DESERVE TO BE EATEN!

Editor's note: I paid for this meal later in the evening, but I had a good magazine to read while I waited for things to sort themselves out.

Reggie Ball managed to lead the Jackets to a mediocre ACC Championship showing this Saturday.

I'm so glad that I spent $90 per seat to watch this game. Plus the time in the car, the hotel...

Chances are we'll be asked to the Gator Bowl right back here. And the weather will likely be nice. And we'll probably play a lot better, maybe even win. And then I will have officially chosen the wrong Jacksonville game to attend.

At least the B and I had some time together. He enjoyed saying "tadow!" (touchdown for those who don't speak Walkerese) and eating teddy grahams. Wet, but tasty treats.

Christmas hiv hits house

We got deathly ill on Christmas Eve. The night before we ate at Red Lobster, so we naturally drew the assumption that we got attacked by a bad case of mudshrimp poisoning. But the affliction spread from person to person like a bad case of I-didn't-vote-for-it in the Senate. Therefore it could only have been one thing. Asian avian flu. I should have known it was so when we let those shady Asian bird peddlers into our house the day before. I mean they were pressing the hot sell and I admit I got caught up in the excitement of the "three dozen geese for $2" Christmas Eve special they were offering. But I missed all the warning signs, including the bleeding eyes, cough, runny nose, etc. Serves me right.

All better now, we are living large in Micahworld. Merry Christmas, mis amigos. HBD, JC.

Bugs eating my house

Got termite protection on my house today. We had let the bond lapse, and thus had to pay for new protection of the house and will have to pay for the damage the little bastards have done to my back porch.

I hate bugs. Please send me money to help out. I've already cut back eating at Krystal and the Bell to serve an example and leader in my community (see my previous post on Micahville). There's not much more I can cut back on!

I have this belief, and call me a jackass for thinking it, but I have this belief that the scale of the media coverage of Hurricane Rita and the preparations for it is a blatant attempt by the media to get the jump on the next big disaster.

It seems to me that had Katrina not happened, or been a much lesser storm, we would have about half to one-third of the media coverage that we currently have for Rita.

Screw you, media outlets, for being self-serving ratings hounds.

I took a few notes on the drive in today, when I was drinking my fake latte and pondering the fate of our fair nation. I, like many around me, see room for improvement. But I'm a pseudo-engineer (went to an engineering school, loved legos as a kid) and so the improvements I'm talking about have nothing to do with the administration or red states or blue states. I'm thinking more about infrastructure and regulations. I'm thinking about what little pieces and parts would make this city a better place to live.

Sidewalks. The Europeans have them. Downtown has them. Why don't the burbs? Or shopping centers? We need them along all roads, both sides. We need them in shopping centers to allow ingress and egress of pedestrians and handicapped folk. Currently, a person cannot simply walk from their home in Mabletucky to the local Publix without crossing a few unpaved stretches of land, some ditches, and crossing roads with no crosswalks. It's tough to do, and is typically only braved by those with the need - the poor and disadvantaged, who can't drive to the store. The rest of us drive to the store. It's like 1.25 miles away, but I still drive everytime I need some doritos. That's f'ed up.

Counterpoints - a. Europeans and downtowns have sidewalks because of the density of land use and near total urbanization, so it's not a fair comparison to say that suburbs should have sidewalks everywhere. b. The cost of paving those sidewalks has to be borne by somebody. Who would be willing to pay for sidewalks? Plus, the cost goes beyond just paving the sidewalks - it goes to purchasing land from landowners on which to build the sidewalks, get easements or leasing the land from them for the use...as well as the future cost of maintenance and demolition when roadways are expanded. It's a lot easier to tear up some unpaved grass to build that extra lane than to tear out some sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. c. Danger to pedestrians. Having all these pedestrians walking around is a risk and could lead to more accidents, as drivers aren't used to yielding to pedestrians.

Micahpoints - a. Suburbs still need them, regardless of the density of land use. To say that sidewalks are only beneficial in dense, urban settings is clearly a baseless argument. Anyone who lives in the burbs of America has seen plenty of immigrants trying to walk to stores and places of interest to know that if we gave them a sidewalk, it would make their day. Plus, by doing so we'd encourage fatass Americans to get off their keisters and shed a pound or two. b. It's called a SPLOST, like the one Georgia's Cobb County recently passed. It's estimated that the 1% sales tax increase will affect the average person in Cobb by $140 a year. That's just over $10 a month. If people could cut back on their video rentals or overage charges on the cell phone, or perhaps cut out two meals at Krystal a month, there's their tax burden balanced by some sound fiscal behavior. Besides, the work created by contracting for some massive city/county/statewide sidewalk building initiative will make more than one set of construction workers happy and that money is thrown back into the economy anyway. c. This argument is lame, and you are a dumbass for thinking it.

Look for more on this later! I can think of several more things that would make our cities SUCK LESS.

So my good friend Swayze has helped guide me in choosing the future of this blog. I told him I had this real dilemma - do I make this blog reflect my own weird, borderline mental thoughts and dreams, or do I make this think normal-ish and PG-13? And he said "you only go around once."

And I thought, "but you see, the shit that's in my head, it's weird." Look at my first post for evidence. And I can flip on a dime from thinking about monkey beards (why don't they HAVE THEM?) to Civ2 to how good triscuits taste with cream cheese to thinking about the terrible implications of the US political forecast (most notably our reluctance to sign/honor the Kyoto accords and nuclear test ban treaties, our drift towards the Right/neo-conservatism, and our willingness to endorse unilateral military action in conflicts against non-European powers...which makes me envision a world where Asian/European economies develop cutting edge biotech research [stem cells, gene therapy] and alternative energy sources [hydrogen, fusion, pebble bed fission reactors] and then leave us in the dust [because we refuse to change, expecting our military eminance will force people to see our way], thereby forcing our [future] hands as aggressors, because by the time I retire, everyone else will be richer and cleaner than us, and probably giving us a lot of shit about it, and our future generations won't have fought in or seen wars except in games and movies [making them more likely to support military action], so they'll think that going out and kicking ass somewhere will bring back the prominence and glory of the US, but such action really just exacerbates problems and ill-will towards Americans, thereby creating a massive increase in anti-US sentiment and terrorism against US assets worldwide...and I'll be damned if I don't like going to DisneyWorld without having to worry if Donald Duck isn't actually some psycho anti-US nutjob in a ducksuit with C4 wrapped around his fat duck ass.

So anyway the crap I put in here really could scare my wife and parents. It may ruin my future attempts to run for office. Hell, it may increase my chances of getting psycho feedback.

But to Swayze's point - "you only go around once". You're right, buddy. I've decided I'm gonna put whatever I want in this badboy. It's mine. Including this picture of a mean looking Lego brick.
